Liberty x Baroness Hale

Bringing legal insight, lived experience and current threats into the same conversation

As a Special Adviser to Liberty, I invited Baroness Brenda Hale, former President of the UK Supreme Court, to Liberty House to discuss emerging threats to the European Convention on Human Rights and the rule of law.

Baroness Hale presided over the Supreme Court case that I brought on equal civil partnerships. Her court’s unanimous 5–0 ruling led to a change in the law, extending civil partnerships to all couples.

The conversation brought together three perspectives: judicial insight, legal strategy, and lived experience of using the law to achieve change. It created space to reflect not only on past success, but on how similar approaches might be applied in the face of current challenges.

This is typical of how I work: connecting people across law, philanthropy and campaigning, and grounding discussions in both experience and the realities of how change happens.
